COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Courses by Stephanie Swanson

Spanish for Littles (Ages 4 -2nd Grade)

Spanish for this age is almost entirely verbal. We will practice the language through play, song, dance, arts & crafts and any other tactile means. Students will be expected to participate and also repeat after the teacher. We will work on both solitary words and whole phrases.

Spanish for Middles (2nd - 4th Grade)

Spanish for this age group takes on many of the same practices and principles of Spanish for Littles, with the addition of some reading and written activities, appropriate for the age range. For example, we may play games that involve reading from the board or writing words and/or phrases on miniature white boards.

Spanish for Juniors (5th-8th Grade)

Spanish this group will still have a slight element of play, because all of my classes do, but not quite as much as the younger groups. We will work towards being able to read, write, speak and listen to the Spanish language. This will take more than a semester. However, as students become more and more accustomed to the language, we will gradually read longer passages, write paragraphs rather than stand alone sentences and so forth.

*NOTE THERE IS SOME OVERLAP IN GRADES IN THE YOUNGER SPANISH COURSES. THIS IS SO THAT YOU CAN PLACE YOUR STUDENT IN WHICHEVER CLASS YOU THINK WILL BE MORE BENEFICIAL FOR HIM OR HER. FOR EXAMPLE, SOME SECOND GRADERS MAY FIND THE SPANISH FOR LITTLES TOO “BABYISH,” AND WANT TO TAKE THE NEXT CLASS UP. I WANTED TO LEAVE LEEWAY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TO MAKE THE DECISION THAT BEST SUITS YOU.*

Spanish for High School ( 9th - 12th Grades)

Spanish for High Schoolers will be adjusted depending on exactly what the students in class need. If they need credit for a homeschool program for example, I will work with parents to make sure we meet that requirement. I do have work students can do at home either digitally or written. There is a small fee per semester for that additional work. However, I focus more so on being able to read, write, speak and listen in Spanish, rather than a heavy focus on grammar. Students will be shown how verb conjugations work, but will not be made to conjugate lists upon lists of verbs.

Adult Spanish 1A (Basic Beginner)

This is an introduction to Spanish class for adults. I have had students ages 14 and up take this class, as well. This class will usually only be offered in the evenings. Students will begin speaking day one, and learn to read and write in the target language.

Adult Spanish 1B (Second Semester of Beginner)

This is a continuation of an introduction to Spanish class for adults, semester two. I have had students ages 14 and up take this class, as well. This class will usually only be offered in the evenings. Students will begin speaking day one, and learn to read and write in the target language.

Spanish Lunch Hour for Adults

This is an introduction to Spanish class for adults. This class will is only be offered during lunch time/midday. Students are encouraged to bring their lunch, their friends and colleagues and learn the language.  Students will begin speaking day one, and learn to read and write in the target language.

Culture & Geography of the Spanish Speaking World

This class is for grades 6th-12th. This class will take place over the course of two semesters. The class is  taught in English, but is recommended to combine it with either Spanish for Juniors or Spanish for High School. We will cover a variety of cultural topics related to each country in which Spanish is the primary language. Students will also learn to locate each country on a world map, and be able to discuss geographical information about each country.

ELA: English Language Arts (Grades 5th-8th)

This class will slightly dependent upon student needs, however students will read short passages and answer question, as well as read a class novel together. We will work on vocabulary and spelling, as well as parts of speech and grammar. While this class meets for two hours at a time, it is not meant to be a stand alone in your homeschoolers ELA education. While, I would be happy to offer work for non-meeting days for an additional cost, I just want to make sure your student is getting a full spectrum ELA learning experience, as I truly believe reading, and the many components that go with it, are the foundation your child needs in order to be successful in other academic subjects.

Correspondence for Teens (Grades 6th -12th)

This is a brand new class! We will focus on various aspects of letter writing, thank you cards, email etiquette, resignation letters and depending upon the average age of the students possibly resume writing. I am hoping to coordinate with an ESL school and exchange pen pal letters, and teach how to property address and stamp letters. Throughout these exercises, I will lightly cover vocabulary and grammar.

Making Reading Fun: Not a Chore (Ages 4-8)

This course is for students who have already (at least partially) mastered the decoding of words and have some reading fluency. The purpose of this course is to help students improve their ability to both understand what they read and be able to put it into their own words. Students will read and answer questions, both verbally and in written form.

Reading Comprehension: (Ages 6-9)

This course is for students who have already mastered the decoding of words, blending sounds and have reading fluency. Students will read age appropriate passages, discuss with the teacher and the class and answer written questions. They will work to build sentences and learn how to search for "textual evidence."

Math for Littles : (Ages 4-8)

This is a math course for the most basic of mathematical concepts. Students will learn to recognize numbers in 0-31, learn about calendars: days of the week, months of the year, their birthdays, etc. They will practice and learn emergency numbers such as 911 and at least one phone number provided by a parent or guardian. They will work to learn their address. We will cover shapes, counting  and tally marks. Once all previously mentioned concepts seem mastered, we will begin addition followed by subtraction.

Emotions: We All Have Them! : (Ages 4-8)

This class will cover all the basic emotions and help littles to be able to describe how they are feeling. We will read books together, play games, and sing songs all related to emotions. We will cover facial expressions and how to recogize the emotion connected to them. We will learn that although all our emotions are valid, that does not always mean our actions are valid. We will learn the importance of apologizing and how to do so.
